The letter of intent, addressed to the advisor, must be written in the form of a full-block business letter. The student will submit two copies to the advisor. The letter must be organized as follows:

  • Paragraph One: Description of the general focus of the Senior Project with an explanation of how the topic was selected and a summary of the student's previous knowledge about the subject; statement that reveals how the project is a learning stretch

  • Paragraph Two: Specific description of the focus of the research, with mention of potential sources

  • Paragraph Three: Detailed description of the projected product, including clear connection between the research and the product; analysis of how much the project will cost, the time it will take, the resources that will be necessary, the experts in the field who may be consulted

  • Paragraph Four: Explanation of plagiarism, how and why the student will avoid it, a statement acknowledging the repercussions of plagiarism

AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL LETTER TO THE JUDGES

A letter (written in the form of a full-block formal business letter) must be included in the student's portfolio. The letter is the student's first opportunity to make an impression on the judges. It should be an example of the student's best writing, expressing how he/she views him/herself.

In the letter the student may include family background, hobbies, goals, passions and talents, as well as any handicaps or other unusual circumstances that might help the judges understand the student as an individual.

It is important that the letter include reflective comments about the following topics: the student's experience with the senior project (paper and product phases, the student's feelings about his/her high school years, any regrets or highlights, etc).
