Course Description

General Music is a 1-credit course to introduce students to music on a broad scope. It provides an overview of basic methodology of music, music history, musical form, and the role that music plays in our lives.

Text and Required Materials

  • Music! Its Role and Importance in Our Lives by Charles Fowler
  • Three ring binder with paper for note taking. You will be responsible for keeping all materials given to you in the binder.
  • Writing utensil (either pen or pencil)

Exams

  • There will be 14 tests/quizzes worth 100 points each given during the course of the semester. Each test is designed to assess unit readings, supplemental materials and lecture.
  • There will be a comprehensive mid-term exam of the material covered to date. There will also be a comprehensive bonus test given at the end of the semester to assess student’s retention of the class.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor if he cannot be present for a test and arrangements will be made.
  • Any suspicion of cheating, plagiarism or false representation will be investigated and may receive the grade of “0” at instructor’s discretion.

Course Activities and Assignments

Students will learn through lecture, group discussion, video presentations, and writing.

  • Student’s will see two movies (Amadeus and Phantom of the Opera) in class and take 100-point quizzes on each.

Available Points

There are a total of 1400 points possible in this class between both quarters. You will be provided a Personal Grade Record to help keep up with all points being earned. You can check your average in the class at any time by adding up the points you have earned to date and dividing by the points possible to date.
