  HONORS ENGLISH II

  McNairy Central High

  Mrs. Diane Kimmons

Welcome:

I became an English teacher because I love to read a good story.  I hope you do, as well.  If not, I hope you change your mind.  Honors English II is an advanced class for college-bound sophomores.   The literature covered will focus on American literature with a variety of short stories, poetry, essays, and novels.  There will be many opportunities for participating in oral presentations and creative projects.  As an honor student, certain expectations apply.  The honor student must:

  • 1. Be self-motivated and willing to do more than what is asked or required.
  • 2. Be tolerant of other people's opinions.
  • 3. Accept instruction and constructive criticism in order to improve oral, written, and interpretive skills.
  • 4. Take full responsibility of all assignments.
  • 5. Make attendance a priority and make-up missed work without prompting.
  • 6. Listen carefully in class and follow directions without excessive need for clarification.
  • 7. Prioritize one's learning as an on-going process by refraining from procrastination and cramming.

Required supplies:

  • Three ring binder
  • Loose paper
  • Pencils/ pens
  • Separator tabs
  • Highlighter
  • A personal copy of Night by Elie Wiesel and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

Folder:

YOU are responsible for maintaining a folder and bringing it to class EVERYDAY.  All notes, work and handouts will be filed in this folder.  Separator tabs should be labeled:  Vocabulary, Grammar, Writing, Literature.  Random checks will be made throughout the semester.  It is very important to keep all work and handouts in the folder to use during class time.

Vocabulary:

There will be a weekly vocabulary list.  We will discuss the terms throughout the week and test on the last day of the week.

Evaluation:

Grades will come from writing assignments, projects, and tests.  All grades will be averaged equally with the exception of the midterm, final exam, and the state test.  The End-Of-Course test given by the state will count as 20% of the overall grade.  This is a state mandated test and must be passed before a student can receive his or her high school diploma.  The research project is a requirement for the course as well.  This is policy for all English classes at MCHS.  No credit will be given without a satisfactory research paper.  In order to continue in the honors program, a student must have a final grade of 85 or higher in this class.

Make-up work:

YOU are responsible for obtaining assignments missed and making arrangements to make-up tests.  All work should be returned within a week.

Classroom Expectations:

1.  Be responsible.

2.  Be on time.

3.  Be attentive.

4.  Be respectful.

Consequences:

1.  Warning.

2.  Cleaning duty.

3.  Call to parent.

4.  Office referral.

FYI:

All school rules will be observed in this class such a tardies, dress code, cell phones, etc.  No personal items, such as purses or backpacks, are allowed to sit on the desks.  There is a basket under each desk for these items.  My desk is off limits.  Please do not take anything without permission or go behind the desk for any reason.  Food and drink are allowed as long as it is not messy or distracting.
